I LIVE IN IL.
When I moved into my apartment back in March I was told that certain things needed to be fixed. One of the things was the tile in the shower that had come off the wall. They told me it would be fixed. Well I had to call them back befor I moved in to remind them to fix it because they had not. So then when I did move in I noticed that the tile had been put back up but two of the tiles wer cracked in half and they just filled in the cracks with what looked like grout. The first time I took a shower I noticed that the grout was coming off in chunks... then I relized that it was not grout at all but dry wall paste. So I called the management and told them about it and they said ok we will send someone out to put in a fiberglass shower unit. I thought ok that sounds good. I was also asked at that time if I wanted to be home when they came. I said yes. So 2 weeks passed and nothing... so when I went to pay my rent I told the lady agian about the problem and she said she was going to put an order in for it now. She then asked if I wanted to be home when they arrived. I said yes. The next day when I got home from work I saw that my front door was open, so I went in and asked the guy that was in my living room what he was doing. He said that he was sent from the office to fix my shower. I came to find out that he was told to just put some grout over the dry wall paste. I called the office and told them the problem this time and told them that I wanted to be home when they were going to fix anything. The lady was very rude and said that they do not do that anymore because they have so many apartments to maintain. So I said, if you don't do that anymore then why was I asked if I wanted to be home... she said she did not know. She then said that they will come back to fix the shower with the fiberglass wall unit. 3 weeks passed and a few more calls to the office and then today they came to fix the shower, they used construction cement to glue the fiberglass wall unit to the tile, they got the cement all over the inside of the tub and the bathroom floor, and the pipe that comes out of the wall for the shower is now loose so it pull out of the wall, it is just a cosmetic problem I guess but with the constant adjusting of the shower head it could eventully break the pipe in the wall and that could cause water damage not only to the apartment but to my property. When I told the maintance man about this he said Ok I will get some puddy and seal it up ... That only worked until he was gone... now I have the same problem and it looks even worse. Is the apartment management doing anything agains the law or are they breaking the terms of my lease... What can I do about this... I also do not have locks on 3 of my windows, they gave me some screen fastiners to screw to the window ledge so the window won't open. When I asked for them to fix it correctly they said they would not do that, it would require them to replace the whole window... and one of the windows is cracked... they will not fix that either. This is not what I expected when I moved in. Some of my friends told me that I should put my rent money in an escrow account until I feel the repairs have been done correctly... is this what I should do and if so what ramifications can I expect from the apartment management. Thanks for your time ... and sorry about such a long post.
