I don't know why my previous thread was closed but I was
asking to anyone who has ever been through a custody battle
and hired an atty. about how much am I looking to spend?
I know all cases are different but this is my first time having
to hire an attorney and I have no clue as to what to expect.
THanks.

usually the retainer is 1500 to 3000 and then if you have a dirty battle you can expect to pay even more....i've paid 5500 so far and am still fighting

My boyfriends lawyer wanted $500 up front (retainer) and then $500 after the final court date when it was all said and done. But as mentioned before, it really just depends on how drawn out and nasty things get. He requested drug testing which was like $125 extra, and was going to request a psychological eval but they wanted $1000 for that, so he didnt. I guess you basically get what you pay for, he was the most reasonable, but at the same time he really sucks at returning phone calls and doesnt put much effort into anything. My advice would be to make sure you dont just settle for anything, but make sure that your representation has lots of positive references before you get locked into anything financially.

Thats cheap compared to what my husband paid. He paid 5000 retainer, and he saved alot by doing most of the work himself. What I mean is that he got all the evidence himself, like doctors record , school records things that he had access to, so the majority of the money will be spent on court stuff like filing this. Also his attorney charges for things like telephone calls so be careful after you hire one, dont call for silly things or you will be paying more.

As you saw in the other thread, you could be paying as little as a few thousand, up into the tens of thousands.
