Question about sexual misconduct by a coach

My wife and I just found out that our daughter's coach (he is around 50) who had been working with her for her basketball skills had inappropriate sexual contact with her. We are not sure how far it went nor how old she was at the point when it started - she could have been 17 or he may have waited until she was 18. The question is if it turns out she was 18 - the fact that it was a coach (in Connecticut) does that make a difference whether we can press charges or not? you cannot press charges. only the district attorney can. you can file a police report if she was a minor. she can file a police report herself if she was an adult at the time.

If this is in a school setting, even if the daughter were an adult it would be a crime.

Generally, under CGS Sec. 53a-71, a person is guilty of sexual assault in the second degree when he (1) engages in sexual intercourse with a minor who is 13, 14, or 15 and (2) is more than three years older than the minor. However, the crime also includes cases in which a school employee engages in sexual intercourse with a student enrolled in a school in which he works or a school under the jurisdiction of the local or regional school board that employs him. This provision applies regardless of the student's age and the difference in age between the student and the employee. It also applies to (1) coaches and (2) school volunteers 20 and older who are in a position of power, authority or supervision over a person under age 18.

Sexual assault in the second degree is class C felony or, if the victim of the offense is under 16, a class B felony. A class C felony is punishable by one to ten years imprisonment, a fine of up to $ 10,000, or both; a class B felony is punishable by one to 20 years imprisonment, a

fine of up to $ 15,000, or both. In either case, the court may not suspend or reduce nine months of the sentence. In addition, the violator must register as a sex offender for 10 years.

The way we found out was she told us because she is now having a hard time dealing with it. Sleepless nights, crying. We told her to talk to a mental health professional at the college that she is now attending which is out of state.
It was not her high school coach, it was her travel coach. They would practice at a different high school than hers - it is actually the school where he works and coaches.
My wife and I are both upset about all this.

Thank you Banned_princes. I already hold her that most likely she was not the first one and if nothing is done about it she will not be the last. But right now I think we need to get help to fix her psyche.
I just wanted to be armed with the legal end of things if it did happen starting at 18. Because I have a feeling that because he has a lot to lose he may have waited. We have not pushed the subject because she is a wreck right now and many miles away.

A side issue I have is what makes magically different at 18 then if it was 17 & 8 or10 months.

This was a school setting (high school setting even) it doesnt matter how old she was.
