Went to DMV, had to enter crap in a computer just to get a number. (what ever happened to just taking a number???) So after about a half hour we got called. Got both his vehicles title transfer going, new titles will come in the mail. So that's done. I did not ask about the back tax, why poke the bear huh? I have till the end of the month to respond to this. My daughter says just pay it and be done with it. I say screw that, state gets enough money. STATE should check value BEFORE accepting transfer fees, license fees, etc etc. State was not there when buyer and seller met. MONTHS earlier no less. If he had a bill of sale my guess is once the truck was licensed, plated, insured, why keep that? My daughter has been handling his retirement funds and investments etc said she found a large withdraw BUT.... He had been giving her big lump sums to the tune of 10 grand at a time to help her out. She's been struggling money wise. So I don't know how much of that was for truck and how much he shot to her.
Besides this truck is only 5 years old and tax was charged on it then. Nothing like double dipping by the state. Collect tax on the SAME vehicle twice in two years. State should not feel cheated.

Anyway later this month I will call them, explain the situation and go from there.

Went to social security next, again computer, enter crap, get a number. SO stupid. Big huge building with about 40 windows and I swear only 2 were manned. But to get my SS payments straightened out, will need his death cert which I brought with, AND our marriage license which I cannot find. After some 40 years together, that might have been lost ages ago. SO now I get to dick around with the state of Illinois to get that replaced. Two sites to try, the state itself which apparently only does it via fax, (I do not own one) or mail. NOT even an email to be found on the site.
Some other site my daughter sent me, VitalChek.com Well just great. I get to some page in their form select something only the little drop down box handle does NOTHING at all. Tried three different browsers, nope. Stuck at that point. Can't get past that page, and again no contact info to be had. So will go the slow paper route.
Should have done this sooner, MY SS payments aren't making it. I just couldn't deal with any of this. My daughter is right now trying to decipher the long winded forms we have to fill out to get his retirements funds moved to mine. Thank goodness for her help.

Hey everyone thought I'd post a final follow up.

So got hold of the SS, all they needed was a copy of the death cert and waived all future issues. So the whole mess is done.

Still waiting on the state of IL. Seems my husbands last joy ride in his truck he used the tollway out there and I don't know what he was thinking, maybe he just forgot he wasn't in his semi but in his own truck and did not have an IPASS. of course any way to actually PAY a toll is long gone, so they not only sent a bill for tolls but JACKED UP THE PRICE. I wrote to them, got ignored. Then I got a notice from another state, (NY I think) so clearly no one read my original letter, I sent a copy along with his death cert. And I don't care what IL does. They can pound sand. But my guess the death cert does the same as it did here in MI and they just let it go. Not like they can forward the bill to Heaven.

Anyway thanks to everyone for all the replies. Lets call this one closed now. Cheers.
