What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Texas

I have two social security cards one individual. Not likely, but when my identity was stolen and my passport went with it too. I reported to the immigration, it took time though I was unsure of what to do. I renewed everything including my S.S#. Problem is I never found much use for the second S.S# so I just let it stay their, until I started using for credit. Then I discussed it with my accountant and he said, no you only use your original so he did some paper work to make everything legally correct. He also said it wasnt normal for people to have two #'s... Well how do I close second number. I never used it except for credit. when it came to work it was always my original number. So I checked my credit report and I have too check one number then the other but they both show same history no matter which one I use # for credit. Anyways it is to confusing for me and I want to close and just have one like everybody else. How can I do this if I had both #'s now for about 15 years.

How did you obtain two numbers? (this might be important)

From SSI

It 's all legal I have never done anything illegal. Not even entering this country I did it legally. However, like I stated when my purse was stolen everything went with it.. I was kinda ignorant back then so I waited I didnt know what to do. My mom had to take me go to the immigration office just to jump start me. Then after immigration said go back and get another SSI. Reason being when they saw in the computers that my immigration card was indicating I was somewhere in Missippi. Which I never was.. So they figured someone got a hold of my identity of course and was using it. So I did went back filled a paper and told the SSI officer what immigration told me to do. They just here fill this out so I did.

Out of curiosity how did they (and which "they"?) find that your permanent residency card was being used? And for what? There's no alien tracking system in the US - I'm genuinely puzzled :)

Regardless, if you are issued a new number you're meant to stop using the one ..you should ONLY be using the newer number.

I didn't know about the tracking system, thanks for the heads up. The way the immigration officer knew was because when my renewal process came up she said they had foward everythingto Mississippi which according to them they (immigration) thought I had moved their and they said I requested a change of address and to foward everything regarding immigration status over there. So I said NOPE I never moved showed them proof what not of residencey work status etc.... At that point she issued me my passport new one and some other paperwork I had to do.. Then she informed to go down to SSI and get a new card. So I did. I also had to go down to SSI twice to correct my date of birth on my old social security number becuase someone keeps switching it??? They correct it for me but really dont say much to me about it?? I just confused I have two numbers and that my accountant told be to always use my original one. Well I guess I need to talk to an SSI employee.

I'm confused.

Immigration issued you a new passport? They don't issue passports.....that's a different State department.

And to obtain a new social security number (versus a new replacement card) you have to have some sort of proof that your identity is being used and is having a negative effect. What proof did you have?

Finally, if you are issued a new number - and your accountant got this one wrong - you're meant to stop using the old number. You're not actually allowed to keep using the old one....and one of the reasons is that once you are given a new number, the old number is flagged and essentially retired.

I'm also not clear on the issue of renewal - Immigration don't automatically renew a green-card; the resident has to apply when the expiration date is getting closer. So...if you were up for renewal, you would have had to apply yourself - and that would mean you're using your current, correct address. I'm not seeing why Minnesota would even come into the equation.
