What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NC

I have a question. I work in sales and am compensated by a salary and a commission. Can my company deduct money from my commission because I failed to turn a report in on time? The report has nothing to do with the commission. It is a weekly sales activity report. I was informed by email, not a rule in our handbook or anything that if my report was late again (and it was), that management would deduct 5% from my commission. I do not even know what that amount would be since it varies based on sales for the month. Is this legal?

Probably. Do you have a commission agreement? Did you sign anything? Sounds like the employer is adding a requirement to the plan which they can do as long as 1) they give you prior notification and 2) you didn't sign anything saying that changes cannot be made without your written concurrence.

Whether you think the report is relevant or not is not your call. Of course, the easy answer is just do the report and turn it in when required. Presto, non-issue.
