i live in chicago, illinois and am going through a divorce from my wife. It has been dragging on for a long time, but i thought that on march 23, 2001 we would finally finish the matter. i received a letter from her lawyer saying that they had their motion to withdraw entered and continued, and status set for the next status date that had already been set. what does that mean? are we still going to court on the 23rd or does this mean that it's continued. thank you

My response:

It means that the Status Conference will be continued. Obviously, your wife can't continue with the Action until the Representation issue is resolved. So, everything is on hold for the moment until the Motion is heard by the court. I would strongly recommend that either you, or your attorney, appear at the hearing. That way, you'll know what's happening as it happens.

She'll either wind up representing herself, or through new counsel. So, at the Motion hearing, the court will set a new date for the Status Conference and, before that new date, theoretically, you'll receive Notice and know whether she's acting In Propria Persona, or has a new attorney.

Good luck to you.
