Mediation is a requirement in CA for anything filed relating to family court...

So, this is standard procedure. While I haven't heard, personally, of an attorney being present for mediation I would think a call to the mediation place might answer this.
Often times, when parents go to mediation, they think this is the place to vent regarding the other parent. That is a big no-no. Mediation is to hopefully work things out before going to court, but personally, I have yet to find someone who has done this (work things out before going to court).
You want to go into mediation focusing only on the child/ren and their best interest. It is NOT a time to bash or find an audience to discredit the other parent.
They also will show a video of what mediation is about before you meet with the mediator (in the cases I've seen) and believe it or not, this video will tell you exactly how to act...most ignore the video but there is valuable information there.
This is from personal experience and not legal advice.
Good luck!

I have been to mediation in California three times. In my case I was assigned a mediator that to this day is still my mediator. I had a good experience with mediation and found it extremely beneficial. I came prepared with issues I was concerned with and a calendar of desired visitation periods.
