Questions about Social Security Disability

Hello - my name is Kari. I am here because my father (57) is currently trying to get on Social Security Disability.

He has type 2 diabetes, hardening of the arteries, has had two heart attacks, arthritis, constant numbness in his arms & lets, vision loss, ect...

Literally he is unable to work. Walking from the house to the garage is a feat for him. He gets dizzy, blacks out, gets confused as to where he is at, and at times, has passed out, and falled down.

Now my question is, if he applies for SSDI, can they deny him based on his current assets? He has roughly $50,000 in savings, and he has a house that is in his name, and in my sisters name. (She lives in it.)

I helped him apply for what we *thought* was social security but my father recieved a letter back stating that he was denied because he has too much money/assets.

It is possible that the paper work that we filled out was incorrect. My dad went into the office to get the paperwork, and told them that he wanted to fill out paperwork for SS. So I'm assuming they only gave him paperwork for SS, and no SSDI. I'm not sure though.

Anyways - if anyone could offer any help, or advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like he aplied for SSI not SSDI the first is needs based the other is disability.
Did you go to the social security office to apply?
Has he been on state disability and any doctors say he cannot work, I know common sense says that syncope is a problem, but many people with Type II diabetes work, even people with Syncope work so proving a disability may be difficult.
I would suggest going to your local CIL and speak with an advocate, they can assist with the application and followup and give you referrals to other resources of assistance in the meantime. You may also want to speak to an attorney regarding estate planning so as to plan for a time when he may not be able to care for himself.

I see you started another thread, did you contict the local ilc office for assistance, they are very good at working with these issues

I'm sorry - I just now saw your post.

May I ask what the CIL office is, and what can they do to help my father?

I do know that many people can work with type II diabetes, but right now, with the health that my father is in, I don't see how it is possible.

Currently, he cannot get out of a chair without stumbling, and almost falling over. I have witnessed him passing out, and falling over completely. He told me that those incidents happen several times a day.

I'm afraid one day he will fall into a diabetic coma.

My father has no health insurance, so he is not getting any medication to help with his diabetes. Not to mention his eye sight is very poor.

Things are hard right now. I have a brother and sister who have no interest in helping my father, so I am the only one trying to get him some assistance. I am 22 years old, work full time, and try to take care of things in my life too. It's very difficult.

I just wish they wouldn't make this so darn hard! lol.

Anyways - thanks for the reply. I will look into the CIL office, and see what they can help with.

Call the cil office from the list above that is closest to you hopefully if you have to re apply, they will back the application to the date of the SSI application there is a 29 month wait for medicare from the date of disability so your father will have to get his medication in the mean time.
