What is the name of your state? AL but MS Jurisdiciton
Some of you may remember, but in July of 2006 my husband was granted temporary custody of his daughter and in December given permanent. Her mother pays c/s and carries the health insurance, which we reimburse her for 1/2 each month.

My husband received a letter from her with an 800 number on it and stated that the current physician we have here in AL for his daughter is not on her insurance plan so we will have to call around and find one. My husband tried, but since the insurance is in the ex's name, no one will discuss the plan with him.

So, should he file for a change of venue and move the case here, since AL is now the child's state of residence for over a year and petition to modify the order so my husband can carry the child on his insurance?

Is there something that precludes your husband from just putting his daughter on his policy anyway? Usually, just because a CO says that the NCP must carry insurance for the child, it doesn't stop the CP from purchasing a policy on their own...

It was a big deal when they had court. The ex's insurance is only $127.00 a month but does not include dental. My husband's is $300 a month and does include dental. I was told the ex said she was not going to pay the cost for 1/2 of the insurance if my husband carried the child on his insurance since her's was cheaper. The problem is that her insurance is a MS plan and we live in AL and it was hard to find a physician who would even consider accepting the insurance card for a MS plan to begin with. At the time of court, it didn't seem like a big deal to leave the insurance matter as it was, but now it's beginning to be a problem.

Your husband's insurance would be 300.00 for just the child?

You see the problem with that too, huh?

That's an awful lot of money for just 1 person, especially a child.
Yes, I know for a fact that a private policy for the child could be purchased, even including dental, for less than half of that...maybe even for less than mom's current insurance.

My husband tried, but since the insurance is in the ex's name, no one will discuss the plan with him.

Ask Mom to contact her insurance company and grant Dad permission to discuss the benefits for the child. In my situation, my stepson is covered under my medical plan. I was able to fax a letter to my insurance company stating that his Mom (CP) was able to discuss benefits and claims pertaining her son directly with them. It has worked for us without problem.

I know, I know, but I talked to the insurance rep at my husband's work myself, and it's $300 per month for 1 child. It's also Blue Cross/Blue Shield, but I guess it's so high because it's a small company?

My husband checked into ALLKIDS, but that didn't pan out either. I don't have insurance myself, because my employer does not offer it and I simply can not afford to pay it for myself. The cost was $94 a month, and our budge just won't allow it right now. Plus, we can't afford $66.50 a month for 1/2 of her mom's insurance and an additional sum for extra insurance for her.

He had to threaten her with contempt charges just to get a copy of the insurance card. God knows what he'd have to do to get her to fax a letter.

I'm sorry, but something just doesn't sound right in this situation. I can think of a bunch of places where you can get insurance for the child at less than $300 per month...
