What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Georgia

My parents purchase a home in 1974. They paid off the loan 30 years later. The family sold the home April 2016. We received half of the money November 2016. The firm who is handling the sale says they can't give us the rest of the money because the original owners family won't sign a document stating they sold the house to my parents. Can this be true. Shouldn't this been cleared up during the probate process?
