What is the name of your state?New Jersey

My car was rear-ended as I was stopped to turn into my driveway. The other driver admitted he didn't see me prior to the impact. I only have liability insurance on my 1997 Ford Taurus. Will his insurance company pay for the damages to my car? Do I need to contact his insurance company? How do I know if he even reported the accident to his insurance company?

His company will pay for your damages. If they haven't yet contacted you, call his company and give them his policy number. They will tell you whether or not he reported it. If he did not, you can report it.

another question

How long can I expect to wait for someone to assess my damages? Both insurance companies have been notified. Obviously I have been inconvenienced with having no car now. Would the other driver be liable for a rental car?

You can expect it to take anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks to have an assessor look at the car. Hopefully it will be towards the shorter side of this time frame.

If the other driver has coverage for it, then yes, his insurance company will pay for a rental. Otherwise you'll have to file a claim against him in small claims court for your damages, or use your own rental coverage (assuming you have it).
