We received a cashiers check for 3,800.00 that turned out to be counterfit. My bank cashed the check for me that same day...it was not a deposit. Now they say I have 120 days to pay it back. I will pay it back if I must but there is no way I can pay it back in 120 days. That's about 1,000.00 a month for four months. I don't have that kind of money. The day I took the check to my bank the bank manager looked over it and gave the teller the ok to cash it. I am not a professional and had no idea the check could have been fake...but I am surprised it passed through both the teller and the manager.

Unfortunately, there is no real way to tell by sight whether or not a check is good. It is also not always possible to call the drawing bank to verify funds because of stricter bank privacy laws. Therefore, the only way to tell for sure if a check is good is to run it through the Federal Reserve. In this case, it was returned unpaid because it was fraudulent.

There are no laws that will protect you in this case. The only thing you can do is see if your bank will be willing to give you more time to settle this. The money is owed to them, and they want it back.

I take it you went out and spent the money right away from the sounds of this. I mean, it could not have been a matter of more than 5 days before the bank contacted you to let you know the check was no good.

Where did all that money go??? And, what did you get the check FOR?
Was it an online sale? Did you earn that money?

I hope you didn't "just" get this check and think, OOOH - FUN MONEY....
I mean really, do you catch my drift??
Do you know what the check was for?

But, I agree, the check was no good, and the bank has the right to request that you repay them. 120 days is 4 months. You had better get a part time job to pay the debt. Next time you "come into" money maybe you'll think twice before you run right out and blow it all

Nope, probably sent a majority of it to the scammer that sent the check. I have a fake cashier's check tacked to my office wall for $12,500. I sold a Rolex watch on eBay for $300 and the winning bidder sent me the fake check and told me to keep $500 and sent the rest back to him. Hahaha. Haven't heard a word from the crook since I told him I gave the check to the FBI.
