I married last year and my husband had $16,000 of IRS debt, plus several thousand dollars of bills, unbeknownst to me, and we paid $3,500 in attorneys fees to straighten out legal issues. I said since we were committed I could help him and the pay back would be his contributing to expenses in the future. I got a second mortgage on my house. Last week he announced he was going to keep his money and contribute $100 of his check to the household, and less if he bought groceries. That was unacceptable and he has gone. Is there any way to recover the money ($25,000) of his debt paid, all incurred before the marriage? He also left me with the credit card bill in my name, et cetera. I don't want to spend a fortune in attorneys fees to try to recover something I may not be able to recover. He's in bankruptcy and would probably file again. I make substantially more money and if he doesn't pay I will manage. He also has a court date for back support in May for another ex. My lawyer advised we would have to prove that it was fraud and that I was supposed to be paid back. I would never have paid that debt if he had said that when it's paid I'm going to keep my money. It was supposed to be a commitment. It was a real struggle to pay that amount of money in that amount of time. Now he walks out debt free and is gloating.
