What is the name of your state? CA

here is my problem that this principal also caused. My son missed a short amount of time at the end of theyear, it was excused or should have been excused bc I brought a valid doctor note. See my other post for more details on that, but suffice it to say that the prncipal at the school did not 'believe' in psychiatric conditions and treated my sons absence (for anxiety condition) differently than other illnesses. He was defiinatley out of bounds on that one. Too much to go into here. Anyways as a result the principal said he would 'have to go to summer school in order to be promoted' even though his grades were okay, he said it was bc of the absences. I told him that the doctor didnt think he would be all okay and ready to do a campus based summer school. I told him that he could do home instruction with the same materials possibly. He said that was okay. Now, forward to start of summer school. I went to pick up his books at the office and requested that I talk with the summer school teachers to get an idea of the overall lesson plans and the principal told me I could not talk to the teachers to get any info, because if I was doing independent study than I "had to do it all on my own". I told him that is really odd, because I happen to know that when a kid is out sick, and does teh school work at home the teachers are allowed to talk to the parent or whoever is doing the tutoring. He said no, it means 'your all on your own'. After I went home i noticed the math book he gave me was for the wrong class. He has a special ed math class he's in. He refused to let me simply come and exchange the math book for the right one, and told me that in order to do that, I would need to come to another IEP meeting. HUH?? I had just attended an IEP meeting less than 2 weeks earlier which OKAYED the special ed math. I told him I was not going toattend another meeting in order to get the book he already should have been given. He refused to give me the right book and I ws not goign to attend another meeting and did not have the time even if I wanted to. My son was not able to do that mathbook and now the principal said that he will put him at the same grade as last year.
Can anyone w/ IEP or special ed give me some help here? What is the name of your state?

Is your child a client of the Regional Center?
When you request independnet study/homeschool, you become the teacher.
If you failed to compete the assigned work to be promoted then your child will repeat the same grade again. Thsere are way to get the appropriate book from your district special ed director, did you try to contact them?

yes I did contact the district person about his refusal to provide my son with the appropriate math book. I was given the run around saying that he principal 'was in charge of that'. I was not allowed to explain teh situation, hey, he has an IEP and they okayed this math class, but principal won't let him have the right textbook. A family member was ill and i had alot going on, there was no way I was going to play games with that principal and come to yet another meeting that we already had. The real issue herre is that he refused to provide the materials that went with the IEP, and tried to shoehorn him into doing the reg math book.

PLEASE PLEASE go to www.schwablearning.org and sign up for free to post on their parent to parent message board. There are lots of very caring people there who will be glad to help you.

I"ve been around on this site here long enough to realize it's not all it wants you to think it is. There is a lot of negativity here.

The schwab site is full of parents who have had trouble with schools and IEP's. And they have all found legal ways to get help.
I promise you won't regret going to the site!!

An anxiety disorder is not going to require a special math book, you should have been able to use the standard math book while you were teaching your child one on one, or is the anxiety with you or are you not competent to teach math to your son? The IEP is for his classroom experience, not your home school experience. You kept your child out of school, you requested to home school your child and didn't do that either, that is where the responsibility lays. An anxiety disorder will only work as an excuse so far, if your child has a learning or developmental disorder, ask to have him tested, these may exist in children with normal to high IQ and may present as anxiety because they cannot abstract and have poor judgement or are immature.
