What is the name of your state?I have two tickets to a local New Years event and I would like to sell those tickets at a profit. However, I’m told that in Illinois it would be illegal for me to ask more than face value. I don’t see the sense in that so I have to ask, is that true?

I am not a professional broker or scalper or whatever you call people who make a living at it. But I did risk losing hundreds of dollars by purchasing non-refundable tickets well in advance.

The Illinois laws for 'ticket scalping' are pretty strict.

The applicable statute (720 ILCS 375/ - Ticket Sale and Resale Act) can be found at:
http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/ilcs/ilcs3.asp?ActID=1921&ChapAct=720 ILCS 375/&ChapterID=53&ChapterName=CRIMINAL+OFFENSES&ActName=Ticket+Sale+and+Resale+Act.

Buy a long raincoat and stand on a street corner saying, "Psst, hey buddy - - wanna buy some New Years tickets?"

Just be sure you are wearing CLOTHES under that raincoat... or 'scalping' will be the least of his worries!!

Thanks for at least one reply that made some sense. I found it interesting that the Illinois statute, called the “Ticket Sale and Resale Act” really didn’t define what a “ticket” is. When I purchased admission to the event all I got was a reservation and a confirmation number. Perhaps I’m splitting hairs, but not certain that this is ticket.

And make darn sure your "tickets" are tranferrable? Since you dont actually have a paper ticket this could come into play. You could sell this to anyone and the event people may not let them in if it is not in thier name.

Now if you can transfer the tickets, recheck the law and see if you can place an ad in your local paper advertising something at your home for sale for whatever price you want and offer the tickets free if they buy that item.

And that they are REAL. Lots of people purchase tickets (or reservations) over the internet, then print out the document to take to the event, usually with a bar code to validate the ticket. Of course, these 'tickets' can be printed thousands of times.... but only the first one used gets into the arena. The second and any subsequent 'presenters' get turned away at the gate.
