I was recently informed by my Univeristy that they inadvertantly released a database containing 1200 students' personal information, including Social Security Numbers. They e-mailed this out to 300 persons, and are currently trying to do damage control. I have contacted credit agencies and have a fraud alert. The college in question is offering credit monitoring for 1 year.

Are there any laws providing any level of compensation. I am suprised, and in shock that a University which prides itself on having a Program in Computer Security and Information Assurance can allow something of this magnitude to happen.
