What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? New York

I share an apartment (which my family owns) in the city with a roommate. A pipe burst in the unit and the building has agreed to pay for the repairs and re-locate us to another apartment during construction. My roommate wants the building (or my family if the building refuses) to cover his rent during the relocation period - compensation for being inconvenienced. No such terms were included in our "landlord-tenant" lease agreement. There was no damage to his personal property. The building is providing a temporary apartment and moving services at no cost.

What type of compensation is he allowed, if any?

He is entitled to the same relocation and free moving as you are .

Neither gets to live rent free.

The two of you together , as is now .

With the issue of belongings , even if his or yours are damaged , that's what renter's insurance is for .
