We have recently moved to Canada (toronto). We are looking to rent an apartment. Since we do not have any credit history here, Landlords are asking us to pay one years rent unfront, Or that we hire a lawyer to vouch on behalf of us.
What is the best way to go about renting an apartment for new-comers like us?
Is it common practice to pay one year rent upfront or hire a lawyer for this purpose?

Remind Canadian LL that his Canadian credit report bureau can get an American credit report on you (for extra money, of course). Offer to pay the extra money yourself.

I get credit reports on Canadians from Toronto.

NO its not that common.......but do you have a very good JOB? is it a transfer?

They do this to rich foreginers here in NYC 6 months or 1 yr. paid in advance and also to diplomats and their families...its not illegal.....but here has to be a few who would take 2 months security KEEP LOOKING!
