What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Father died in California, I live in Ohio

My father died in March of 2008. I received a letter from the Federal Employee's Group Life Insurance (FEGLI) in July of this year stating that I was named a a beneficiary on my father's policy. I sent in the required information and they sent my sister and I a check in August.

The end of November, I received a letter from FEGLI stating that a revised Designation of Beneficiary dated 2/28/08 was submitted, but that the Office of Personnel didn't get that form to them until after they paid me in August.

My question is am I responsible to repay this even though they had the new form almost 6 months before they first contacted and paid me?

Yes, unless you want to be sued in the future by the benefiary and/or the insurance company if you don't repay the money. It's not their fault that a mistake was made in processing the document, but they are allowed to make mistakes. Ask for a copy of the Designation of Beneficiary form so you can scrutinize it to see if it looks legitimate.

Is the new beneficiary related to the decedent or not? Just wondering.
