Hello,

These are the examples of Teacher-Student abuse that I am experiencing: Unfair academic treatment, including bias or preferential treatment in grading. Denial of educational opportunities. Emotional and verbal abuse. Discrimination based on protected categories, such as Nationality, Religion, and sexual orientation. And consequently, through the actions of the administration, restrictions on the constitutional rights of the student, such as those involving free speech and freedom of expression.

Here is my experience:

I am a student at research institution that receives federal funding. The teacher was a political prisoner in Iran (before the Islamic revolution). He was freed after the revolution (self-admitted) and he now he teaches Persian to the families that were complicit to his imprisonment (Western Iranians that moved west after the Islamic revolution). The teacher studied at a university in Iran's Islamic center. This seems like a conflict of interest since he can identify westernized Iranian dialects, and given his past history. I have voiced concerns about his unprofessional attitude and demeanor (toward me), as well as his bias in his grading process. There are no other Persian language Professors at this school. He creates a hostile learning environment by routinely calling me, "uneducated," and by inferring that I know nothing. I've never experienced this at at level of the American education system. It makes you want to leave, especially since you're paying handsomely for the abuse. None of the American students are treated this way; therefore, Ancestry and Religion are factors because I feel as though I am part of a group that is being treated differently than other students, as a non-Islamic Iranian-American. I also wore an earing earlier in the year, so sexual orientation could be a factor, though I have since removed it. I have voiced my concerns to the administration, and nothing has changed. Instead, they suggested that I should submit to a psychological analysis (seek mental heath council). And his harassment has continued because he enjoys the effect it produces--frustration, which further denigrates my reputation at this institution.

Since the problem has remained unsolved, and I must take his course for another year to graduate, I am seeking council because I don't know what to do, yet I do know that this is not a healthy, nor normal learning environment for someone from my background.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Really.

You're not always going to get along with people in authority over you.

You have the white or the black ox to get out of the well you have fallen into. The white ox is Zigner's suggestion. The black is to fight perceived bias. Choose wisely.
