What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?
Maryland

My new (1/17) SSA 623 Payee Report lists last year's "Saved" amount as $0. I assume this is because I think I didn't send in last year's report. If I use $0 as a starting point my bottom line is a deficit of $200. There was actually a saved amount last year though.
Should I:
1. amend the $0 amount on the form?
2. let it stand and send in a deficit report?
3. Contact SSA?
Is there a penalty for not filing the report last year?

I don't know much about rep payees, so you may get a better answer elsewhere.

If I were you I would do #1 - write in the correct number for the start of the year and take it from there and see if ssa asks you for more info.

or #3 - if you call ssa, talk to your caseworker. do not talk to the person who answers the phone - they will not give you correct info.

If there was something in last year's report that would have caused a problem with benefits, then they could want some money back now.

if there was no problem, you just didn't send the report... I don't think there is a penalty, but they may remove you as rep payee if reports aren't being sent in. I'm not sure missing one report would be enough, but I don't know.

Thank you ! I don't have a caseworker and I tries calling the info line, but was not comfortable with their requirements for giving SSN and other info before asking my question. I may try going into the office to see if anyone will answer my question anonymously.

You're not comfortable giving your Social Security number to the folks at the Social Security office?

I've met other people who called their ssi caseworker with questions, so I assume you have one too, you just don't know who it is. You can call and ask.

depending on where you live, if you show up without an appointment, you may have to wait several hours. in some areas there is no wait though.

social security is well-known for giving out incorrect information over the phone.
