What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NJ

Does a perspective employer have the right to obtain your college transcript without permission.

A prospective employer cannot obtain a copy of your college transcript without your written permission. Employers will often request official transcripts to verify college attendance and graduation.

Did this actually happen to you where the employer did get your college transcript without your permission?

By the way, when you fill out and sign a job application your signature authorizes your prospective employer to do a background and credit check. The authorization is likely broad enough to be construed as allowing him to get your college transcript.

Even if you don't give specific permission, you may have given permission anyway.

The school can't release your transcripts without first verifying legal approval. If you, or your legal guardian handed over your transcripts to them without giving them written authorization it is completely legal.

And the employer may put your application in the Do Not Hire pile if you refuse permission to request the transcripts.

It is sort of a no-brainer that a prospective employer can obtain a copy of the transcript if wendynj hands the prospective employer a copy of her transcript.

For an employer or prospective employer to get an official transcript, which generally would be sealed and sent directly to the employer, however, wendynj would need to provide the college with written authorization to release the transcript to the employer/prospective employer.
