require DR's note when calling in sick

Iowa-Can an employer require a note from a Dr. if you call in sick? Some of those that abuse the sick day policy by calling in with hangovers on a regular basis I can maybe understand, but they are still ours to use,I feel. However if someone like me who does not abuse sick days does call in sick say with a migrane or a fever that will require a day or two in bed without serious health risk by not seeing a Dr. can they require me to spend 50$ to see a Dr. that will more than likely say drink plenty of fluids and rest? Every time one gets sick they don't need to see a Dr. A woman where I work was recently fired supposedly for not bring in a Drs note. She had worked there 21 yrs.They said she called in alot and that she was late and her work ethic was poor. I disagree with that, they just didn't like her. However there are men that have not showed up for work and did not call in and they where not fired nor given 3 days off without pay. The woman my friend worked under is an absolute tyrant on a daily basis and I know the stress was horrible. The main boss in the plant seems to excert undue power and control,but especially with me now and I fear I'm next on the hit list. I can understand the need for a note for clearance after a serious contageous condition. But can they require one for an everyday kind of illness? I've even gone to work with high fevers and headaches for fear of being fired. Thanks to you all Peace
