Last year my husband and I allowed a friend to stay at our home until they could find other housing. It has now been a year since they left abruptly and in doing so they left all their personal property. The verbal agreement was that they would send money for us to ship it to them. There has been no money sent. How long do we have to keep this property before we can get rid of it. What should our legal course of action be in order to protect my family from any legal action for loss of personal property ?????

Most states have a procedure in the law for disposing of personal property. It often involves holding and storing the property for some period, then having an official sale in which you can deduct your expenses and return the rest of the money. Sometimes, if the value of the property is small, you can skip the sale.

Check your state laws.
