What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Texas

My adult son of thirty years, was collect SSI on my record and he failed to inform the Social Security Office, for two months that he got married. I received a letter from the Social Security Office, informing me that I am being held responsible for the monies he collected. The wavier form I filled out states at singing, payee or representative of payee.

My question is, how can they consider me the payee or the representative of the payee?

If so, could you please point out the law they refer too. My personal opinion, it’s nothing short of extortion.

I assume your son is getting SSI because of a disability. Is it a mental disability that would give him problems in managing his own affairs? If so, when you signed up for the payments, you might have placed yourself as the "representative payee" for your son. This might also have happened if you started payments when he was a minor.

What does the Administration claim is the reason why YOU have to pay the money back?
