What is the name of your state? California

My wife was confronted in a very threatening manner by my child's stepfather. He was shaking with clenched fists, yelling, and approaching as if to hit her. She is very threatened by his behavior. How could she go about getting a restraining order from him? What is the procedure? What qualifications have to be met? She is very scared around him. Your thoughts are appreciated.

she was around him during an exchange with my son. She was taking him to say goodbye to me and his birth mother physically grabbed him and pulled him away while his stepfather started yelling at her and approaching her.

Perhaps the easiest and most obvious solution would be to not have her present for the exchanges? Why hadn't you already said goodbye?
