After 20 years, my spouse and I divorced (State of Alabama). We separated property and filed our divorce papers ourselves filling out our own forms. My ex-husband had been employed for 19 of those 20 years by the same employee and had a defined benefit retirement plan. I had worked all those 20 years but had not attained retirement benefits from any of my employers (not worked long enough at each one to receive retirement benefits). Our divorce papers read that we were neither one entitled to the other's retirement, "except as shall be allowed by law". I did some research (afterwards) and believe that by Alabama law, may be entitled to part of his retirement (he is still working and is not retired). Am I entitled to part of his retirement and if so, how do I go about filing papers with his employer or otherwise?
