What is the name of your state? California

So our apartment was robbed during our spring break. We got a number of things stolen with a combined value of roughly $3-4 thousand?

Anyways, we don't have homeowners insurance and we were wondering if we could do ANYTHING to be compensated for our loss?

Keep in mind that security has been a problem at this apartment complex. It's been known to have weak security and multiple break ins... Just in the last few months, two of our cars were broken into and one car was actually stolen later on. Knowing that we are easy targets for thieves, do they hold ANY responsibility at all?

The apartment complex is pretty upscale compared to the other other complexes around this area and so we actually pay a LOT to live here, considering that we are only college students. IS THERE ANYTHING WE CAN DO?! :(

Another question, my friend's stuff was stolen. He doesn't live with us and has homeowners insurance for HIS apartment... would he be able to at least get money for his things?

Your friends own policy should address his thefts. Your LL is not responsible for crimes that occur. Too bad you chose to not have renters ins for your personal property. Crime problems come and go SO even a area that has little trouble can erupt in a short time with multiple incidents of theft.

College students are known to possess expensive and unsecured electronics - computers (desktops, laptops), mobile telephones, stereos, iPhones, iPods, MP3 players, etc. Which does mean “easy target” to the common criminal, probably someone familiar or fits in with the student populous or another student. Since you are students (presumably still dependent upon parents), your parent’s homeowners insurance may cover the theft and loss of property while away at college, especially if the parent made the original purchase. Make a complete list of missing items and file a formal police report for the insurance company.

Two cars broken into and one car stolen in the past> That should have told you something.

Let this be a lesson . . .get renter's insurance. It's cheap and easy.

The reason I was hoping something could be done was because I heard of a somewhat similar situation where victims were compensated due to lack of security... A particular bank in southern california was a constant target and customers would be robbed after withdrawing money from the ATM. It was so often that they took some sort of action and won. I didn't know the process or under what grounds they were ... uhh ..suing? I'm not sure if they sued. I'm not sure of the details of that case, but it was something I've heard of.

Thank you for the responses! All were greatly appreciated.

Frankly - using an ATM OUTSIDE a bank is ASKING to be ROBBED ANYWHERE - not just SoCal.....you should have had renter's insurance and you need to check with parent's homeowner's carrier to see if your items are covered there....the apt mgmt is NOT responsible for you not having proper insurance and I suspect there is a caution in your LEASE to arrange for your own insurance.
