I reside in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

My roomate decided to stop paying rent and the bills, but he is still living here. We talked it out and he says he will pay, but now avoids me because he is never home when I'm home. I arranged a meeting with both of us and the landlord, and the only way I can get out of the situation is if we both agree to have one of us taken off the lease. He told the landlord that he would think about it. After the meeting, I ask him how long it was going to take for him to think about it and he told me, flat out, that he wasn't going to let either of us leave. He said he was still going to pay me back for the rent and bills. I feel this is an empty promise because there is a lot of other money that he promised to pay back, but never did. We had personal problems and it seems he is going to take advantage of the lease as an act against me. I looked up the Oklahoma Residential Landlord and Tenant Act, and it only apperas to protect the landlord, not the tenant.

I read your response to another forum member and I understand that both of us are responsible for the full rent, no matter who pays. I'm going to decide to wait until the end of the lease(July 31st) to see how much he doesn't pay me. Then, I will take him to small claims court.

I am a little frightened on how my case will hold up in court. We only verbally agreed on how the rent and bills were going to be split up. There is no written agreement between us. The only documents I have are all the receipts of the rent I payed. Only my name appears on the receipts, even though he payed me for the rent before.

Basically, it will be my word against his. Is it still worth going to court?
