What is the name of your state?

Hey everyone, I am from Connecticut and have a lot of questions. MY friend wanted me to find some answers ASAP. Well, at age 16 here in Connecticut, if this person were to runaway (move-out), would they be able to go out of state without being emancipated. Could they live with an aunt that lived in Massachusetts and lastly could they go to another state to live with someone else? I would appreciate the help. Sorry if this is the wrog forum to post in and if it is please let me know if any moderator moves it.

Thank you very much for your help

Hello BelizeBreeze, thank you very much for the quick response. :) But, my sister ran away and while at court for emancipation she said she wanted to leave the country so the judge thought this was a bad idea and gave her friend's parents guardianship of her. The judge did this, but then told my parents she wouldn't order my sister back home because my sister would jst leave again. My point of this all is that wouldn't my friend be able to just go right back up there?

Thanks again!!

No, it isn't. 16 yo's are still legally children and children don't get to decide where they live. If your friend/gf/lover/sister/etc decides to take off and stay with someone else, and her parents report her as a runaway, the cops can haul her away from wherever she's staying and charge the adults who she's living with with all sorts of things. She's not an adult. It's as simple as that.

But, let's say I move out of the house, is it legal for me to stay at my aunts house? I read somewhere that it is perfectly legl to move out when you are 16. Can you bring me up the law where it says you cannot on some particular website? Thank you very much

Kid, you're looking for justification for breaking the law and it's not going to happen. If you don't want to take the chance, then have your aunt file for guardianship.

That's IT!

I was using myself as an example. My sister did move out and she got in no trouble in any way. I don't understand it in any way. My sister said it's perfectly legal to move out at age 16. Just saying what i heard. Not saying it's right because you guys seem to know a lot more than me

Fine, next time you speak with your sister ask her where she studied law and where she is licensed to practice law?

As for me, I'm done.

You already have been given the proper advice. I think it was not what you wanted to hear. You need to wait until you are a legal adult before you can legally move out or do as Belize has suggested. Until then you need to abide by your parents rules.
