What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Virginia

At my employer, salaried exempt people have to make up anytime lost because of Sandy or use vacation to cover time lost. They we’re closed. It was not safe to travel to work. They will dock the money at the last pay period. Is there something more to this, or is this the way it goes?

Yes it is legal for them to make you work the additional hours or use leave. What did you think your leave was for anyway? It is also legal for them to dock your pay in daily increments if you did not work due to the storm.

The work is still there to be done. It's perfectly legal and totally makes sense.

In many companies, it is normal for salaried employees to work extra days, before and after a vacation, to make sure their position is covered. This is the same type of situation.

They can make you use vacation, however if you don't have any vacation time and you were unable to work due to reasons outside your control (office closed) and it was LESS THAN A FULL WORK WEEK, they can't dock anything from your actual pay.

Factually true. They can however institute a temporary requirement for salaried employees to work 60 hour weeks.

While its understandable that its a hardship for you not to receive regular pay because of the storm, its also a serious hardship for your employer. They received no revenue nor were productive during the period they were closed either. Its not a "choice" that they had.
