What is the name of your state? va

I have a child which is being deprived of services from the local school board. He has a speech problem and is very difficult to understand. Te school board says he meets his standards of learning but I believe this does not disqualfy him for speech services due to the no child left behind law. I have several teachers of his saying he needs these services and wonder what can i do to get him the help he needs. I am thinking of a lawsuit against the school board but would rather not put all of us through that if it is not necessary. Any suggestions?

Has your son already been evaluated by the school?

If the school has already evaluated him, and they refuse to provide the services you feel are necessary for him to be successful in school, the school must provide you with a written notice detailing why they are refusing these services.

If you disagree with the conclusions drawn from this evaluation of your son's disability done by the school, you have the right to have your child evaluated - at the school's expense - by a qualified independent examiner. If you request an independent educational evaluation, the school must provide you with information on where to obtain it.

You may contact the Virginia Department of Education in Richmond, or visit the following sites for more information: www.doe.virginia.gov/VDOE/Instruction/Sped/proc_safe.pdf or www.pen.k12va.us/VDOE/Instructions/Sped/proc_safe.pdf.

He has had an evaluation and was previously in speech classes, but the school decided to remove him and says he meets his sol's and testing. He continues to not only have articulation errors but is also very hard to understand. Even his teachers are complaining. We have been through the school, school board, and even consulted his primary teacher which agrees totally with us, but cannot get involved because of school regulations. He continually cannot produce many sounds like truck comes out fu.. the letters p q s v b d f g l and probably a few more are a real struggle for him. We are going to try your suggestion and see where this goes. thanks
