Are school fundraising ie:cheerleading, football, etc.... records available for examaination. I live in Suffolk Co. N.Y. and feel these funds are not being used as they should be. Can the Freedom of Information Act be used to gain the records of how these funds were spent and distributed. Someone should be held accountable when they are used for other than what it was intended for. Who would the request for these records be made to?
Thank You in advance Jimmy

Without knowing the answer to your question I can tell you that most of the money raised in school fundraisers goes to the promoters - the people or companies who organize the sales. Its a pretty lucrative business and I know of a person pulling in six figures a year just by getting these kids to sell overpriced junk for thier schools.

Have you asked the school for access to these records?

I know 1/2 of the sales went to the club/sport. A parent is in charge of this money. Some was spent in a way that is not benifiting the team/club. Just wondering if thru the Freedom of Information Act I could get the records from the school/parent. Or is this just something that should be open to anyone for the asking. Thank you Jimmy:confused:

If this is done by a club without the help or blessing of the school, then you may have a hard time convincing the school that the fund distribution records are public records that re covered under the FOIA.

And what are the members of the club doing to ask for accountability of these funds? They are the ones who have standing to complain about the workings of their group.

You don't need FOIA. You need to ask for an audit. Any organization collecting money for school (or any nonprofit function like this) has to provide an accounting of their monies and expenditures. Every year hundreds of Little League, school activity programs, Pop Warner, Big Brothers, club sports teams and leagues are caught with their hands in the cookie jars. You'd be amazed at what "caring parents" can justify when it's donated money they are spending.
