My son is in 3rd grade and the school wants to retain him, I asked them not to retain him and to be placed in fourth grade class. I've been to school meetings monthly, he is being tutored by 2 seperate teachers and both say he is doing great. what steps do i need to take to move him forward to 4th grade? and can they retain him without my consent? social promotionWhat is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

Moving him into 4th grade before he is ready will be detrimental to his education. Social promotion is a BAD thing.

Third grade is when they really get into reading comprehension and extensive math skills. If you child is lacking in this area, you would be doing a disservice to your child. Does the teacher say WHY they are asking for retention?

School meetings for what?

Doing great as comparable to what? What are they tutoring him for?

Get him to PASS 3rd grade.

and can they retain him without my consent?
Yes, if he is not prepared for the next grade.

Social promotions are actually against my school district's rules. It's written out that they are forbidden. If a child can't do the required work, they should not move to the next grade. Especially in 3rd, where the state tests in reading.
