What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Nebraska

So my college the University of Nebraska at Omaha keeps funding if it is over the cost of attendance. I am going to ask them how this is legal tomorrow but wanted help. They once said if you go over they pay off some loans. Now I'm finding out they are lowering my full tuition scholarship if you go over the cost of attendance. They will apparently keep the money not informing the sender of of said money. I just don't see how this is legal. I understand giving the money back to a scholarship if I go over but how can they just keep it? I mean I'm the one who is supposed to have the money right?

Im having trouble working this site with my iPad and this seems the only way to reply. Say my COA is $14000 and I receive 15000 in scholarships they keep the 1000. I do not get to have it

Are you sure its not coming from a scholarship fund at the school itself? If the school itself is funding part of your scholarships it might be completely legitimate for them to keep any money you do not need for items the scholarship covers.

Why would you think you could keep the money from a scholarship that exceeded the Cost of Attendance?

Presumably, the scholarship is intended to cover the Cost of Attendance, NOT to give you a bonus with which you can use to go out on a spending spree.

I understand what you are saying and that makes sense. Some of it may have been Grants or outside school scholarships so when they do take it I won't be able to tell what part they are taking it from. I didn't thing about it that way. Thank you for your help.

I understand this but just thought it was weird that a scholarship is for me but then they keep it without notifying the Foundation who supplied it. Then again they were probably taking it from their own funding.
