I moved from my apartment located in Albuquerque, NM in October after giving my landlord 30 days written notice. The landlord did not come by to check the apartment before my departure. My landlord requested that the keys be left in the apartment which I did with a note instructing him of the address to send my security deposit. I have sent a registered letter since then requesting that my check be mailed but still no check nor a reply stating that he has reason to be holding my security deposit. What should I do next?

Are you still near to Albuquerque? Have you tried to reach him in person? It was probably a bad idea to leave the keys without doing a walkthrough with the landlord. I am sure your lease said something about that. It also should spell out the procedure for getting your deposit back. Make a copy of it and send it to the landlord. If you still do not get a response, consider filing a small claims action. You will be able to get a judgment against him for the money due to you. Good luck.
