My previous landlord deducted a number of things from my security deposit at the end of my lease and returned almost nothing to me. One thing she deducted was $1000 for painting the apartment, which she only "spot" painted when we moved in the year before. During the time I lived in the apartment, I did not alter the color of the walls or do any major damage. Therefore, I didn't think it was the tenants responsibility to pay for painting when leaving an apartment - I thought it was the reponsibility of the landlord. Am I wrong?

Also, she deducted the cost of carpet cleaning citing that we had pets. She knew that we had a cat when we moved in and was aware we got a small dog while living there, but did not say anything, or require a separate "pet" deposit to cover any possible damage. Therefore, can she remove this cost from the sec dep?

Please Help! I'm planning to take her to Small Claims Court and want to know if it's worth my while.

You'll lose on the pet. If she had a special pet deposit, you'd have lost even more.
