I will give 30 days notice. I'd like to use my security deposit as my last mos. rent.In so doing I don't think I get interest. Is this true? I'm in N.J.I never had a written lease. Also dueThanks to the broken front door I almost had a break in with my locks being broken. With the landlords permission I had a locksmith repair them. How do I deal with reinbersment?thanks.L.D.

First you CANNOT use your security for the last months rent without the landlords approval.

Second you can deuct the cost of the lock off of next months rent.

Third the landlord will not give you back your security, so you will have to take pictures of the apartment, get 2 or 3 of those disposable ones and make extra copies and get them dated and time stamped...to present to a judge when you have to sue the LL in small claims court.

He has 30 days i think to give you back your secuirty minus any damages, and interest who really cares yeah he should but even $1000 at 2 or 3% a year is only $20-30 a year in interest, now if we are talking about 10 15 or 20 years then it could be substantial, and back then passbook interest rates approached 9 and 10% back in the 80's
