I live in Michigan. I have been in my apartment for four years now. Every year they raise my rent, which is not the problem, but they also raise my security deposit....My landlord has not touched up the apartment during this time. Can they do this????

Absoluetly......when you signed a lease it said one months security, well they raise the rent they can raise the security to equal one month...

nothing illegal about that.

If you don't have anything locked in, such as by a lease, then the entire rental package can be renegotiated. That includes rent as well as security deposit or other condition (pets, payment of utilities, who takes care of the yard, etc).

The deposit is to secure future performance of the lease, not past performance, so it has nothing to do with whatever you were charged before. It doesn't have to be 1 month, unless it is limited by the law.
