Hello,

I am seeking a divorce from my ex. However, he lives overseas. I moved back to the US in order to escape him as he was abusive.

My question is: can I initiate a divorce from the US without his finding my location? I have reason to fear for my personal safety and so I don't want him to guess my location from say court documents sent to him from a local court. Are there special circumstances or a divorce procedure for cases such as this?

I have written and audio evidence of his abusive behavior and threats.

I am currently in Maine. We were married in Boston, MA.

Thank you for any advice you might have!

You need to hire a lawyer experienced with divorces involving abusive situations.

A good place to start is a local women's shelter facility. You don't need to check in to such a facility to avail yourself of their services, which will include basic legal aid and referal to local lawyer familiar with cases like yours.
