Hi everyone,
I’m currently living in California and have been dealing with severe depression for some time. My therapist suggested that an emotional support animal (ESA) could help with managing my symptoms, and I’m considering getting a small dog, such as a Pomeranian. I understand that caring for a dog is a serious responsibility, and I want to approach this thoughtfully and correctly. One concern is that my landlord has a strict no-pets policy. I’ve learned that an ESA letter may allow for reasonable housing accommodation, but I’m still unclear about the proper process and how to ensure the documentation is legitimate and compliant with housing laws.I recently came across My ESA Therapist while researching options, but I’m unsure how their evaluation process works and whether ESA letters from their platform are generally accepted by landlords in California. If anyone has experience obtaining an ESA letter in California or has insights into best practices for navigating landlord accommodations, I’d greatly appreciate your guidance.
Thank you in advance for any advice or shared experiences.

I see that you read a previous thread posted to this forum about emotional support animals. Good. Provided in that thread is information relevant to you in California although poster “tech.samurai” was asking about Colorado and Arizona. Here is a link to that thread so information posted there is not unnecessarily repeated here:

Here is a link to California’s laws on emotional support animals (definitions and requirements). Click “NEXT” to read through Health and Safety Code, Division 105, Part 6, Chapter 5, Article 4, Sections 122317 to 122319:

https://law.justia.com/codes/califo...05/part-6/chapter-5/article-4/section-122317/

You will need an ESA letter from a licensed professional therapist with whom you have developed at a minimum a 30-day relationship (with some exceptions). An ESA letter you simply purchase online is insufficient.
