What is the name of your state? What is the name of your state? California

I'm from San Diego, CA. I'm planning to sell my car so I put an advertise on web. I got many responses and decided to sell my car for 2000$ to one person. He gave me 300$ as deposit and in return I gave him a letter saying that I sold my car for 2000$ and took 300$ as deposit. But I have a better offer for the car. So can I give the deposit back and sell my car to other person? I want to know if I return the deposit, can that guy take legal action against me based on the letter I gave him. Though that letter is just hand-written on a normal paper but has my signature and date on it.

I'll really appreciate your help.
Thanking you.

Sincerely,
Heena

So you agreed this would be the person you were going to sell your car to.

And then he agreed to buy it and gave you money to hold the car for him.

Then you wrote it down on what you both had agreed to.

Now you want to renege on what you agreed to.

Sure if the guy that wants to buy your car doesn't mind you breaking your agreement with him.

Sure he can take legal action against you.

How would you feel if he decided to break the agreement?
Would you feel you had a right to keep the deposit?
