I left California in 1996 and I am now living as a permanent resident in Western Australia but have retained by U.S. citizenship. I am a retired U.S. Military and receive a VA compensation monthly payment for a 80% disabililty. When I left the U.S., I still had creditors I was paying to and have been until recently when I became unemployed as of 17 August 2000. Some of the creditors have sent me to collections. My questions are what can the collections departments do to me when I live in another country and secondly can they touch my VA monthly payments which is the only money I have to currently live on.
