What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CT

My wife and I are in the early stages of discussing separation.

We own our home outright and have enough money to buy another. However, my wife in her initial meeting with a lawyer was told that during a legal separation you could keep both houses and I guess all remaining assets in both peoples names and could split them when the kids are off to college (in 4 years).

From what I am to understand a legal separation is roughly the same as a divorce in that assets are divided and it is a rare case to have a fuzzy kind of agreement my wife is suggesting.

Thanks.

In the the legal separation is an agreement to split assets a certain way when the divorce becomes final.

Do you want to be legally separated for four years??

Sounds like she wants her claws in as deep and for as long as she can keep them in you.
