I'm living in Maryland. My wife wants a separation and I don't. She wants to make it legal by going to a mediator so we don't end up between dueling lawyers making this ugly. Am I hurtin myself in the long run if this ends in divorce by doing this? We have two children and have agreed they should reside with her in our house. I was ready to move into an apartment so she could have her "space" but people have told me that I would be considered a deserter of my family. Any advice on where to go from here?

You are not deserting them if you arrange to contribute towards their support and to visit regularly. :)
