What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NY

not even sure if this is the right category, but wife moved out,now our18 yo son(I say our because we have raised him since 3yo, but not my biological son) has decided to move in with his grandparents not his mother or me. obviously he can do what he wants now. I guess my question is morally I want to be there for him, but if he moves do I have any legal responsibility for him financially or otherwise anymore? I may need to think of myself and my survival more at this point Thanks

You don't need to support a child that is not legally yours.

The only caveat would be if, in the last 15 years, you created any sort of contractual obligations, those would survive. I'm talking about co-signing for loans, etc.

I do have a college 529 fund set up in my name for him, and recently got him a car.(It is in my name though) are those considered obligations

I can't speak to the 529 fund...

If there is a loan on the car, you are responsible for it.
If the driver of the car is in an accident you will be sued.

This has nothing to do with your relationship to your stepson...

529 plans are a little funny. The money can be transferred from one 529 to another in some circumstances. It is also possible to pay a penalty and withdraw the money.

HOWEVER, I would strongly encourage you not to jeopardize your stepson's education over bitterness because he chose to live with grandma. The reasons may have nothing to do with you.
