I live in the state of Virginia and had a temporary protective order issued today against my mother in law who lives in Ohio. The judge told me that the local authorities can not serve it, since she is out of state. I have to take care of this on my own so that she can appear here in court in 15 days. What in the world do I do? They have the copies that are supposed to go to her. Who typically serves these type of papers? I am totally clueless and need help immediately, because is she approaches me or my daughter again, it will only be a violation if the papers have been served. Please help!

you should be able to have it served by the sheriff's department in the town where your MIL lives. contact them.

Thank you so much for the fast response! So, will the local sheriff's department in Ohio be able to get the copy of the paperwork from the local offices here? Or will I need to get them from there to mail to Ohio? I have no problem doing that, I would overnight them tonight if I could, I am just wanting to make sure I have all my bases covered. Thanks again. I really appreciate your helping me in this difficult time.

this link may help you with your questions, sorry I don't have time to read it all for you, if nothing else, call the hotline and ask them, or call the sherriff's department and ask what they need to serve to your MIL. Just don't dial 911.

Thanks again for your response, but am I missing the link? I wouldn't call 911, but thanks for the warning anyway. :)
