What is the name of your state? VA

Wanted to ask a general question to whoever's listening out there. Here's my deal:

I'm a college student and I picked up a sublease from one of my buddies last year. We're ending the term of the lease and the word on the street (i.e. other residents) is that the Prop. Manager loves to play on the ignorance of students and keep their security deposits. My other roomates want to get our security deposit back to ($1200 / 4). We don't have pictures of our place from when the other 3 moved in, but from what I understand it was pretty shoddy then too. Old appliances, old carpets, old everything!!! Our maintenance guy said that the landlord doesnt even keep records on the place. We're planning on going to court if they decide to keep our deposits, but should we hire a lawyer. Can the rental company charge us for every little ding in ANYTHING around the house (i.e. the wallpaper that was put up in the 70's is starting to curl, the fridge from the 80's has broken trays, etc) What exactly is normal 'wear and tear' that you can not be charged for?

Could someone answer my questions and maybe give me advice on the best way of approaching this situation in the near future, if it happens to go to court.
