Hello! I currently reside in Washington and I am 24 years old. For court documents in regards to child custody (not my kid) and back child support, the question was asked if I was ever charged with a crime juvenile or as an adult, and if so the nature of the crime(s). Here is how it goes:

1. When I was 17, I got caught shoplifting in Minnesota. The value of the clothes was under $100 (no grand theft charges for me- I know that much!). I don't believe I ever had to go to court. A cop did come, but I was never read any rights, put in hand cuffs, etc., although I did have to sit in the back of the squad car and cry until my mom picked me up. Like I said, I do not remember having to make any sort of appearance before a judge, but I did have to perform 20 hours of community service and attend a shoplifting class.

2. When I was 17 (rough year, apparently), I was busted at a party in Wisconsin for under age drinking and received a minor in possession of alcohol. This one, I do remember having to go to a judge and I plead guilty. I had to attend alcohol classes and pay some sort of small fine. I believe that because I plead guilty, that qualifies it as a crime, correct?

3. When I was 20, I received another minor in possession of alcohol, but this time in the state of Minnesota. I don't remember having to go to court or anything (although I could be mistaken. I don't know why I don't remember this crap) and I never had to do any sort of class. I'm sure I had to pay a small fine.

So, my friendly legal advisers, which of these qualifies as a crime? Do I have to report the under-18 incidents? Also, for the record, it's my fiance that is being asked this question and these three incidents happened long before I met him. Since he wasn't there and I'm not even aware if these are considered crimes, does he have to answer the question with a "yes"?

Thank you for your help!

Shoplifting is a crime. To truthfully answer the question you would need to say yes. While juvenile records are generally sealed, that won't stop government-sponsored investigations.

Wisconsin's underage drinking is a citation, you might argue it's not a crime.

A Minnesota under 21 possession/consumption charge is a misdemeanor. It is a crime.

So at least two of the crimes you are obliged to fess up on.

Some youthful indiscretions will look better than the fact you are a current perjurer on your application.
